Renaming Sections

Every resume includes a few must-have sections, such as your contact details, work experience, education, and skills. But you can also add extras, like projects, certifications, awards, volunteer work, or languages.

Rezi lets you customize these headings, so your resume feels relevant to your experience and easy for recruiters and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to understand. Renaming them is also a simple way to tailor your resume for a specific industry or position, as long as you keep your edits clear and professional.

How to Rename Sections

Here’s a quick breakdown of how to rename your resume sections with Rezi:

  • Create your resume and use the Target Your Resume feature if you’re applying for a specific role to receive more tailored suggestions.
  • Complete your resume sections by filling out the standard fields, adding optional sections, and using Rezi’s AI tools to improve your content.
  • Rename your resume sections in the Finish Up & Preview tab by clicking directly on any section heading and editing it to match your target role while keeping the title professional and ATS-friendly.

Let’s go through the process from start to finish.

1. Create your resume

Before you can rename any sections, you’ll need to create a resume in Rezi. You have a few different ways to get started:

If you’re applying for a specific role, it’s worth using Rezi’s Target Your Resume feature. Just add the job title, company name, and job description, and Rezi will tailor its suggestions and feedback to better match the position throughout the resume-building process.

2. Complete your resume sections

Once you’ve created your resume, work through each section and add your information. You’ll start with the standard sections:

And if you need additional sections, just click the three-dot menu at the end of the section tabs. From there, you can add sections such as:

As you fill out each section, Rezi provides handy AI tools to speed things up. You can use features like the AI Bullet Point Writer, AI Summary Generator, and AI Skills Explorer to improve your content with relevant skills, keywords, and accomplishments.

When you’ve finished adding your information, open the Finish Up & Preview tab.

3. Rename your resume sections

The Finish Up & Preview page is where you edit and rename your section headings. Simply click on any section title in the preview, just as you would in Google Docs or Word. From there, you can delete the existing heading, edit the wording, or replace it with a more relevant title.

Check out these examples:

  • Experience → Professional Experience or Work History
  • Skills → Technical Proficiencies (for technical roles)

That said, don’t go crazy — always keep your headings professional and recognizable.

Recruiters expect familiar section names, so avoid taking creative liberties with titles like Career Voyage or My Expertise. If the heading doesn’t clearly communicate what’s in the section, it only makes your resume harder to scan for both hiring managers and ATS.

While you’re in the Finish Up & Preview tab, you can also use Rezi’s AI Keyword Targeting tool to compare your resume against a job description and identify relevant keywords to include. It’s also where you can review your final Rezi Score and feedback, with opportunities to improve your resume.

Summary

Here’s an overview of everything you need to know about renaming your resume sections:

  • Edit section headings by clicking directly on the title, just as you would in a Word document or Google Doc.

  • Before submitting your resume, use the preview page to check your formatting, review your Rezi Score, and optimize your resume with AI Keyword Targeting.

FAQ

Where do you rename your resume section headings?

You can rename your resume section headings in the Finish Up & Preview tab after you’ve added your resume content. Simply click on the section title you want to edit and type in your preferred heading, just as you would in a Google Doc. This lets you make final adjustments while viewing your resume as a complete document.

When should you rename a resume section?

Rename a resume section when a different heading better reflects your experience or aligns with the job you’re applying for. For example, “Education” could become “Training”, or “Skills” could become “Technical Proficiencies” for a technical role. Make these changes during the final review stage so you can see how the updated headings fit with the rest of your resume.

Will renaming your resume sections affect ATS compatibility?

It can, depending on the heading you choose. Small changes that keep the original meaning, such as Professional Experience instead of Experience, are generally ATS-friendly. However, unusual or overly creative titles can make it harder for applicant tracking systems to identify your information. When in doubt, use familiar section names that clearly describe the content.

Can you add custom resume sections before renaming them?

Rezi lets you add additional sections beyond the standard ones, including Projects, Certifications, Coursework, Awards and Honors, Publications, and more. If the heading you want doesn’t exist, you can choose a similar one and just rename the heading in the Finish Up & Preview tab.

Can you change the order of your resume sections as well as their names?

Yes. Along with renaming section headings, you can reorder your resume sections to highlight your most relevant qualifications. All you need to do is head to the Finish Up & Preview tab and drag and drop your headings to rearrange your sections.
