How to Write a Medical Assistant Resume
Short answer:
When crafting your medical assistant resume, opt for the reverse-chronological format to highlight your recent experience and career growth. Start with a clear header and contact details, then focus on showcasing your work experience with strong action verbs to impress both ATS scanners and recruiters. Emphasize specific achievements and results to stand out from other candidates. Include relevant certifications, like CMA or CCMA, and don't stress if you lack a college degree — highlight your specialized training and skills instead. End with a compelling summary at the top of your resume to tie everything together.
Use the reverse-chronological resume format
Choosing the right structure for your resume is the first step in getting noticed. Recruiters are sifting through stacks of resumes every day. Will they focus on the one with an organized and familiar format or the one that looks more like an art project than a resume?
My go-to is the reverse-chronological resume format — it makes it easy for recruiters to find your information while spotlighting your strengths. This popular structure puts your work experience front and center, starting with your most recent job and working backward to show your career trajectory.
Here’s how the reverse-chronological format will look for your medical assistant resume:
Header with contact information
Resume summary or objective
Work experience
Education
Skills
Certifications
Any additional sections
Don’t have a solid professional background? No problem. You can fill that work experience section with hands-on training, internships, volunteer work, or externships.
You can also switch it up by placing your education section before your experience to emphasize your qualifications and training right off the bat. Include relevant certifications and courses that highlight your medical knowledge and skills.
If you don’t have much work experience, you might have been told to try other structures, like the skills-based format — but I’d generally avoid going down this route. Other formats simply aren’t as familiar to recruiters or Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), so it can tricker for them to quickly find key details in your resume.
Here’s an overview of why you should generally avoid other formats:
Functional (skills-based) format. The functional format focuses on your skills, often appealing to those with limited experience or work history gaps. However, this format doesn’t perform well with ATS scanners and will usually only be seen if you send it directly to a human reader. Plus, by placing your work experience further down, recruiters may think you have something to hide.
Hybrid (combination) format. Blending the two formats can work if you want to focus on a wide range of skills while still including a dedicated work experience section. Only consider this format if you have extensive work experience or many technical and medical skills you want to highlight.
Your resume header and contact information are the first things recruiters see and the key to getting a call back — lucky for you, this part isn’t rocket science.
Here’s a breakdown of what to include:
Full name. Make sure your name stands out by making it a slightly larger font than the rest of your resume.
Profession. Under your name, add your professional title, like “Certified Medical Assistant”. This immediately tells the employer who you are and your expertise.
Address. Simply include your city and state, no need for your complete address.
Websites. Add your LinkedIn profile and make sure it’s updated with your latest experience and skills. You can also add an online portfolio or a personal website if it’s relevant to the role.
Your work experience is the star of the show on your resume. This section reveals your skills, professional background, and potential in a new company. You want to show employers that you’ve got a solid track record of positively impacting both teams and patients in medical settings.
But you’re one of fifty candidates with similar experiences — so how do you make sure yours leaves a lasting impression?
A simple trick to getting noticed is by using strong action verbs like “administered,” “coordinated,” or “assisted” to catch the eye of the ATS scanners and impress recruiters. ATS scans for specific keywords, so use similar terms to those in the job description. Just don’t parrot the job ad exactly — authenticity is key.
Now for the number one rule — focus on your positive impact. You could easily say, “Interacted with patients” on your resume. But even I could take a quick trip to the hospital and have a good chat. Be specific and focus on results. Instead, you could say, “Explained treatment plans and procedures to patients to help them feel more at ease.”
Recruiters don’t just want to see a generic list of duties. They want to know how you overcame challenges and found successes, whether big or small — it tells them what you can bring in your new role.
Here’s a work experience section for an oncology medical assistant:
Oncology Medical Assistant ABC Cancer Center, New York, NY January 2021 – Present
• Supported physicians during over 500 patient examinations and treatments, ensuring patient comfort and providing detailed education on treatment plans and procedures. • Maintained accurate and up-to-date patient records using Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, improving accuracy and ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations. • Safely prepared chemotherapy treatments for 150+ patients, following strict safety protocols and ensuring accurate dosage. • Provided compassionate support and clear communication to patients and their families, addressing concerns and answering questions to help them feel more comfortable. • Conducted follow-up calls to patients to monitor their progress and manage post-treatment care, ensuring adherence to treatment plans.
Quantifying your achievements can make a big difference. Instead of saying you “assisted in patient care,” try something like “assisted in the care of 30+ patients daily, improving patient satisfaction scores by 15%.” See the difference? Numbers make your accomplishments tangible and show your real-life impact.
Are your work experience and professional achievements lacking? You can still make an impression. Include internships, externships, or any volunteer work that shows skills relevant to the role.
If you’ve shadowed a doctor or volunteered at a clinic, mention specific tasks or duties. For example, “I shadowed a physician to gain hands-on experience in patient examinations and electronic health record management.” Even if you haven’t been paid, this experience is valuable as it shows your willingness to learn and grow.
Unlike the doctors and medical teams you support, you don’t necessarily need a college degree to become a medical assistant. Many employers are happy to accept candidates with a high school diploma, specialized training, and certifications, like the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.
So, don’t worry about your education section suffering due to not including a college education, especially if it’s not mentioned in the job description. However, make sure you include your high school diploma, GED, online programs, necessary certificates, or trade school training.
For those with a formal education, start with the basics: list the names of any degrees you’ve earned, the institutions where you studied, and your graduation dates.
Here’s an education example for a dermatology medical assistant:
Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting City College, New York, NY Graduated: May 2024 • Relevant Coursework: Dermatology Procedures, Clinical Pharmacology, Patient Care Techniques, and Medical Ethics.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certified: June 2023
Dermatology Medical Assistant Training Program DermTech Institute, Online Completed: September 2022 • Specialized training in dermatological procedures and treatments, including biopsy techniques and cosmetic dermatology. • Gained hands-on experience with dermatological diagnostic equipment and patient care.
CPR and First Aid Certification American Red Cross Certified: March 2022
Having a college degree isn’t necessary for many medical assistants, and some of you may be transitioning from other fields with degrees that aren’t relevant to the position.
But certifications hold a lot of weight — and in many cases, they are a requirement. You can list them under education, but if you’ve got a bunch, give them their own section on your resume to really shine.
You can also include a Specialty Certified Medical Assistant (SCMA) certification if you want to work in specific healthcare units like oncology or pediatrics. And don’t forget the basics like CPR and First Aid — they’re essential in any medical setting.
If you’ve received any awards or recognition for your work, consider adding an awards and achievements section. This can support your soft skills and highlight your dedication and excellence in the field. For example, include any feedback for outstanding patient care as it tells employers you’re committed and have great communication skills.
Include hard and soft skills
Medical assistants have a unique blend of hard and soft skills. One minute, you’re comforting a patient, and the next, you’re measuring vital signs or giving injections.
While both sets of skills need to shine through your experiences, certifications, and education sections, you should also include a small skills section to summarize your abilities. This makes it easier for ATS scanners and recruiters to quickly check off those requirement boxes.
But don’t just dump any old skill into this section — details matter. Start by looking at the job description and pick out relevant skills that match your experience.
Take a look at this job ad for a urology medical assistant:
The description practically spells out what it wants from you. Here’s how you can tailor your skills section to align with the job ad:
• Appointment scheduling: Efficiently managed and scheduled appointments for clients. • Telephone systems: Proficient in handling multiline telephone systems, ensuring effective communication. • Payment processing: Experienced in taking payments from clients for clinical services. • Customer service: Strong background in providing excellent customer service. • Hospital information systems: Familiarity with hospital information systems and word processing software.
Keep it simple — you can expand on all these skills throughout your work experience and education sections.
If you have a mix of hard skills and soft skills, emphasize your medical and technical abilities first, like phlebotomy, vital signs measurement, medical software proficiency, and lab work. Then, move on to your soft skills, such as strong communication, compassionate patient care, and teamwork.
Here are the top medical, technical, and soft skills to include on your resume:
After finessing and double-checking your resume, you can finish with an attention-grabbing resume summary. And I know what you’re thinking — your summary should be at the top of your resume, right? Yes, but it’s much easier to summarize when all yourinformation is already down on paper.
Your summary should be a concise, two to three-sentence overview of your professional experience, core skills, and why you’re applying for the position. Use action verbs to keep it dynamic, but keep them varied to avoid repetition.
Here’s an example medical assistant resume summary:
Dedicated medical assistant with over five years of experience in fast-paced clinical settings, skilled in patient care, medical procedures, and administrative tasks. Proven track record of improving patient satisfaction and supporting medical teams effectively.

If you’re new to the field or changing careers, writing a summary may be tricky without a solid professional background. In this case, you can opt for a resume objective to focus more on your career goals, future aspirations, and how your skills can contribute to the job.
What Makes Medical Assistant Resumes Different
In short: include certifications and hands-on training to show your diverse blend of skills.
Medical assistants are jack-of-all-trades. Your work could involve collecting samples, taking phone calls, dressing a wound, and scheduling appointments all in one day.
Fitting all that into a resume can be a challenge. The trick? Highlight specific situations and accomplishments to impress recruiters. Employers can also read between the lines. So, including certifications and hands-on training tells them you have the knowledge and potential to make a positive difference.
Here are some must-haves to show recruiters you can do it all (and then some):
Highlight your medical credentials and certifications
Highlighting your medical credentials and certifications isn’t just about bragging rights — they show you’re qualified and meet industry standards. Certifications prove you’ve put in the work to hone your skills, often requiring training at an accredited medical assistant program.
What this means for you:
You can beef up your education section with your certifications or give them their own section with organizations and expiration dates. Popular certifications for medical assistants include CMA, CCMA, or RMA.
Many medical assistant roles require certifications, so integrate them into your summary to show recruiters you have the right qualifications and expertise from the get-go.
Emphasize patient interaction
If there’s any place where compassion, empathy, and patience are essential, it’s in a medical setting. You’ll be seeing patients every day, so making them feel cared for and understood is key to helping interactions run more smoothly.
What this means for you:
Detail patient-facing tasks with specific examples and achievements like, “Administered medications and explained procedures to patients, improving their comfort and understanding during treatments.”
Communication is key. Highlight how you actively listened to patients and clearly explained instructions or health information, such as “Documented patient concerns and communicated treatment plans to ensure effective aftercare.”
Detail hands-on experience
While learning how to explain treatments and administer injections at school is all well and good, nothing beats hands-on experience. Showing your medical training and expertise on your resume reassures employers that you can handle medical procedures and deliver top-notch patient care.
What this means for you:
Include practical experience you gained during an internship or externship. Mention the number of hours you trained and specific tasks like drawing blood or performing EKGs to show your medical skills.
Even if you’ve never worked as a medical assistant, you can still highlight transferable skills you’ve gained from other positions. Have you ever worked under pressure or with customers? Great. You’re showing essential communication skills and resilience.
Avoid overusing complex medical terms
Demonstrating your technical and medical skills will help you pass ATS scanners, but you’ve also got to catch the eye of human readers. Many HR folks aren’t familiar with specialized jargon, so you need to balance showcasing your abilities with keeping recruiters engaged.
What this means for you:
Use plain language for key skills. Instead of saying “administered pharmacological interventions,” be more straightforward and say “gave medications to patients.”
If you use a technical term that’s not in the job description, you can give a brief explanation. For instance, write “performed phlebotomy (drawing blood) to collect samples for testing,” so it’s understandable to anyone reviewing your resume.
Bonus Resources for Medical Assistants
If you’ve made it this far, my guess is you’re pretty serious about becoming a medical assistant. Maybe you’re wondering if getting a certification is worth it — after all, they take time, money, and have strict requirements.
Well, if you’re committed to this career path, the answer is a definite yes. Certifications not only equip you with essential knowledge and skills but they’re also required for many positions. Without certifications on your resume, your chances with recruiters and ATS scanners drop significantly.
So, whether you need the credentials or want to advance your skills, here are the top certifications to include on your resume and boost your chances of landing an interview:
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. The CMA is for graduates of medical assisting programs and signifies that a medical assistant has a certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). The program covers a range of administrative and clinical training areas, including medical terminology, computer applications, accounting, laboratory techniques, and patient relations.
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. The CCMA supports physicians with clinical treatments and procedures. They prepare patients for exams by taking vital signs, collecting samples, and recording medical histories. To be eligible, you need a high school diploma or GED and either completed medical assistant training or supervised work experience within the last five years.
Registered Medical Assistant. The RMA exam evaluates your understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and fundamental patient care topics. Eligibility extends to graduates of accredited medical assisting programs, those with military training, medical assistants with a minimum of five years of experience, and individuals who have taught medical assistant courses.
Nationally Certified Medical Assistant. The NCMA exam assesses knowledge and skills in medical assisting areas, including clinical procedures and admin tasks. To qualify, you need a high school diploma or GED, plus either completion of an NCCT-authorized medical assisting program, two years of full-time experience, or a medical assistant training course. But a heads-up — the NCMA is not as widely recognized as other medical assistant certifications.
Summary
Here’s a breakdown of the key steps to creating a resume for a medical assistant:
Start with a strong header with your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn profile to make it easy for recruiters to contact you.
Write an eye-catching summary with your experience, key skills, and what you bring to the role. Keep it concise and tailored to the medical assistant position.
List your relevant work experience in reverse chronological order. Focus on your medical assistant roles, emphasizing positive results across patient care, administrative duties, and clinical procedures.
Start bullet points with action verbs to make your responsibilities and achievements stand out. For example, “Administered injections” or “Scheduled patient appointments.”
Whenever possible, add numbers to your accomplishments so recruiters can measure your impact. For instance, “Handled 50+ patient records daily” or “Reduced appointment scheduling errors by 20%.”
If you’re new to the field, include relevant volunteer work, internships, externships, or doctor shadowing that demonstrate your skills and dedication.
Include essential certifications like CMA, CCMA, or RMA. You should also add any specialty credentials, courses, or awards to show your willingness to grow in your field.
If you have a college education, include the highest degree, the institution, and graduation date. However, in most cases, a high school diploma and a strong GED are enough for a medical assistant role.
Create a skills section with medical, technical, and soft skills. Highlight abilities like phlebotomy, patient scheduling, electronic health records, empathy, and communication.
Ensure there are no typos or grammatical errors. A polished resume reflects attention to detail, which is crucial in healthcare.

I uploaded my application to various websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, places like that, and I was not getting anything that was in the field that I wanted to be in. I put my information in rezi, and I was able to reorganize my experiences and come up with better bullet points for some of my volunteer experiences that were in that field. And now in the past week I've had like five interviews, and I was able to secure a part time job doing something in that field.
For some reason, I struggled a lot with choosing a format for my resume, and then managing that format when I wanted to make updates. With Rezi, I was able to simply input data, check out the preview, and know that it will be formatted correctly when I export the resume to Word. Rezi made it super easy to refine and iterate on my resume. There are alot of options for resume writing, and if you are reading this on the fence about whether to try Rezi, just do it. A simple, fast, well-designed resume tool.
Rezi is now the only place I edit my resume (I've ditched the Word doc I used to use), and I honestly believe that using Rezi has allowed me to create a much better resume than I would have on my own. I intend to keep using it and experimenting more with the AI generation for customizing the resume to different jobs.
Some difficulties that I faced when creating a resume, initially was formatting. Another feature that I've actually found myself using more often than I expected was the professional resume reviews. Other options that I tried in the past, some like, free alternatives. Some of them wouldn't let you say your resume or came with some unexpected strings, but Rezi is super upfront and continues to improve over time. I've recommended Rezi to several of my friends and colleagues who will continue to do so. I just love this product so much.
Not a paid promo. I've been looking for a change of jobs for almost a year. Got a few calls, but nothing what I wanted. Updated my CV through Rezi, the second call I got was from an MNC and something I was looking forward to. And here I am, completing my second month at the new place. I checked with my HR how she found me - it was through the Rezi cv (I had to check because I used to apply with my old CVs as well)Thank you, Rezi. Thank you, Jacob! Yes the UI, formatting, keyword suggestions etc are all great but the best of all - dedicated customer service.
... I created a few primary versions of my resume and then would copy them and use Rezi to suggest content for each job description. Rezi was helpful by comparing my resume to the job description and making suggestions for extra keywords. Using Rezi for this instead of doing it myself reduced my time per application from 1-2 hours down to 15 minutes. The response I got from applications with targeted resumes and cover letters using Rezi was high.
Rezi has been instrumental in a job search I've participated in in two specific instances. Number one, as my own personal resume customization tool. Searching through thousands of different job descriptions as an MBA student, Rezi really helped me reinforce my resume or customize my resume for the job descriptions I thought were most important. And was a great support tool on top of what I already received as a part of a full time MBA program.
UI: Firstly, the UI is a breeze. It's real fun to use, and what I like most is the fact that the application divides your resume into different sections, and you get to work on each section at a time. Psychologically, this helps you alleviate anxiety and just work on one thing at a time. Formatting: Trying to format your resume on Google Docs or MS Word or even Latex can be a hassle more often than not. REZI.AI does your formatting like a charm. There's a handful of nifty features like the auto-tune (which automatically adjusts stuff), borders, accent colors and others. ATS Scoring: This is perhaps the USP of REZI. You can target a resume for a job description and view the score corresponding to that particular application.
I've used many different resume building webistes, all of them ended up wanting more and more money. Rezi on the otherhand has the lifetime option which allows a good taste of what it could do. But overall it is nice and clear what I am supposed to do and love the PDF download option. Not many templates but they are all simple and to the point. Thank you for creating and offering this as a service!
