How to Write a Teacher Resume
Short answer:
To craft an effective educator resume, choose the right format: reverse-chronological for steady careers, functional or hybrid for new grads or career changers. Use clear headers, a concise summary, and bullet points for key details like work history, degrees, skills, and relevant certifications. Include keywords from job postings and any extra activities like tutoring or community projects. Keep your resume focused and tailored to the job, so it’s easy to read and impactful within ten seconds.
Choose the right teaching resume format
Recruiters spend less than ten seconds looking at your resume on average — about the same attention span as a student sitting through algebra at the end of a long day. The twist? The best outliers in that resume pile get much, MUCH more eye time. To make sure your resume gets the attention it deserves, make it easily readable.
Think of that sleepy student — a board cluttered with information will lose them instantly. That’s a poorly formatted resume for you. Choosing the right formatting makes your resume more accessible and helps the recruiter quickly identify key information.
Before you start writing, you need to decide on one of the three standard resume formats. Here are your options:
- Reverse-chronological format: This is the go-to for most people with a consistent work history. It lays out your career growth in an easy-to-read timeline. The downside? You can’t hide any job gaps, and things get repetitive if you’ve held similar positions over the years. So be super strategic about what to describe in great detail vs. what to merely mention.
- Functional (skills-based) format: A functional resume places your skills and abilities at the forefront while your work experience takes a back seat. But be careful, this format can sometimes confuse ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). Also, it’s generally not recommended for more “traditional” jobs (that’s right, such as teaching) where resumes often need to follow certain formal requirements. Use at your own risk.
- Combination/hybrid format: A hybrid format does what it says on the tin by combining a chronological and functional resume. You’ll have a detailed skills summary section at the top and a slightly shortened experience section below. This format can work well for highly experienced candidates because it makes sure the most relevant achievements are mentioned at the beginning so that recruiters don’t need to dig for key details further down the page.
For most educators, I’d recommend the reverse-chronological format. The potential benefits of other formats are heavily outweighed by the risks in your case.
Here’s what the order of sections could look like for your teacher’s resume:
- Header with contact information
- Resume summary or objective
- Work experience
- Education
- Skills
- Certifications
But formatting isn’t just about where you place your sections. That board will still look crowded if it’s packed with randomly assembled pieces of information.
There’s a simple way to declutter all those details: bullet points. As you can see above, they help break down the big blocks of text so your teacher resume skills and experience are easy to spot and read.
Here are some more ways to clean up your formatting:
- Correct Margins: the general rule is to stick to a 1-inch margin. If you’re low on space, you can make the margin smaller, just don’t go below 0.5 inches.
- Clear Headings: use headings to separate sections and to help the reader find information quickly.
- Use of Bold: highlight key details, such as job titles, degrees, and certification names in *bold* for emphasis.
- Professional Font: my go-to fonts are Arial, Calibri, Garamond, Helvetica, or Times New Roman — they look the most professional and are clear to read.

Include all the necessary information in each section
Those key details can make or break a resume. I vividly remember that sinking feeling in school when I realized I wrote the wrong question number for the corresponding answer — I got an F.
Here’s a rundown of the all-important basics to include on your teacher’s resume:
- Start with a clear header. Include your name as the title, followed by your contact information. Add your email address, phone number, and address. If you have a professional website or LinkedIn profile, include those links too.
- Include a resume summary or a resume objective. This should be a brief statement (around three lines long) to introduce you as an educator. Try using the Rezi AI Resume Summary Generator if you need inspiration — just submit your position and skills and the AI will do the rest.
- Detail your work history. In reverse chronological order (starting with your current or most recent job), list your job titles, educational institutions at which you worked, and employment dates. In each entry, using bullet points, highlight key responsibilities, achievements, and the impact you’ve had in each role.
- List your education. Start with the most recent one. Include the institution's name, degree earned, and graduation year. You can also list relevant certifications, like a teaching license or specialized training in the education section. If you have more than two relevant certificates or licenses, put them in a separate section for more visibility.
- Showcase your key skills. Focus on those most relevant to your desired teaching role and explain how you applied these skills. Include hard skills like curriculum development, classroom management, technology integration, and any soft skills that set you apart.
- Add an extra section when relevant. Mention any workshops, courses, or training sessions you’ve attended that have enhanced your teaching skills. This demonstrates your commitment to continuous learning and staying updated in your field. Other examples of extra sections for a teacher’s resume include certifications, volunteer experience, foreign languages, or publications.
Stick to the relevant information. Now isn’t the time to reveal you worked at the artsy Korean comic shop in college (save that for your future students). Limit your resume to the last ten years of your career with experience tied to the job you want — preferably on a single page.

Detail your experience and teaching history
Start with a detailed account of your teaching experience in reverse chronological order. Include the names of the schools you’ve worked at, the dates worked, and your subject and grade focus.
It’s tempting to simply write down a list of tasks when summarizing what you did in each role. But how does that tell the recruiter how successful you were?
Take a look at these examples:
“Created lesson plans and graded assignments.”
“Created a diverse range of lesson plans with integrated technology to boost student grades by 20% in a single year.”
The first example shows what you did. The problem is, your job title alone pretty much reveals that. The second example focuses on how well you did it.
Any teacher can craft lesson plans and grade assignments. But they don’t all have a track record of positively affecting student learning. Focus on your achievements and don’t shy away from quantifying your successes.
What if you don’t have much teaching experience yet?
Don’t worry if you’re new to the scene. Outline student teaching experiences and emphasize any standout accomplishments. List it just like a regular job with the school’s name, the duration, the grade levels, and the subjects taught.
You can also summarize relevant side gigs. Mention your time as a tour guide if you’re going for the role of a History teacher, or coaching if your specialty is physical education.
Once you’ve gained a few years of experience, you can condense or even get rid of your student teaching experience to keep your resume concise.

List your soft and hard skills
Your resume should list your unique set of skills that align with your desired job position.
Need some inspiration?
Key hard skills for a teacher resume
- Assessment abilities
- Conflict resolution
- Digital literacy skills
- Specialized knowledge
- Classroom management
- Creative lesson planning
- Behavioral management
- Diverse teaching techniques
- Special needs education
- Curriculum development
Key soft skills for a teacher resume
- Creativity
- Adaptability
- Strong work ethic
- Critical thinking
- Attention to detail
- Patience and empathy
- Problem-solving skills
- Effective communication
- Time management skills
- Teamwork and collaboration
Don’t make the mistake of adding a long list of generic skills. Instead, strategically pick the ones relevant to the job or the skills mentioned verbatim in the job ad.
Going for a “raw” list of skills is fine, especially if you’re an experienced candidate and those skills shine in other resume sections. But if you want to add more context, you can expand the skill descriptions. Here’s an example:
“Lesson planning: successfully created and enhanced lesson plans to encourage students to speak English in real-world situations.”

Outline your qualifications and education history
Your education is the foundation of your career, but work experience typically trumps your days in college. So keep this section short and sweet.
List your undergraduate and postgraduate degrees alongside the institutions where you earned them. Don’t bother including high school details if you’re above an undergraduate degree. Highlight any noteworthy academic achievements at the postsecondary level.

Take it a step further
Got some extra space to fill? Here are some tips for your resume to get that gold star of approval:
- Add certifications and licenses. Potential employers want to see any necessary licenses and certifications. Begin with your state teacher’s licenses, then list any additional private teaching or special education certificates you hold.
- Include keywords. Many resumes go through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), which scans for specific keywords. To ensure your resume makes it through, use the job posting to identify these keywords and include them in your resume.
- Highlight any volunteering projects. List any volunteer committees you’re involved in, especially if they relate to teaching or community service. Free tutoring, coaching, or even non-educational volunteer work like community clean-ups to show your commitment to helping others.
- Mention participation in teacher organizations. Being part of teaching organizations or academic associations can show your dedication to the profession. It can also help you find connections with potential employers or coworkers.
- List relevant hobbies. While hobbies certainly shouldn’t be the focus, they can give recruiters a better insight into your personality. For example, if you’re applying for an Art teacher position, mention that you lead painting evenings or creative activities at kids' parties.

What Makes Teacher Resumes Different
In short: that you need to show the tangible impact behind your teaching skills and your commitment to growth.
It’s no secret that teacher shortages have reached a crisis level. While it may be easier to land a job, the shortages don’t guarantee your dream job and school — that takes some extra effort.
Make it clear that your impressive expertise will positively influence your students. With evolving teaching methods and technological integration, it’s worth showing you’re eager to move with the times.
Demonstrate personal development
Showing signs of personal growth illustrates your commitment to honing your craft and improving your skills, making you a more attractive candidate for employers.
What this means for you:
- Mention any workshops, seminars, or presentations you’ve attended — but don’t stop there. Explain how these workshops helped you discover new teaching strategies or how that seminar gave you fresh insights into classroom management.
- Show your continued education by listing courses or training programs you’ve completed. And you know the drill, writing a list isn’t enough. Explain how these courses directly impacted your work in the classroom.
Include relevant certifications
Let’s be honest, everyone has a degree nowadays and competition for the top jobs is fierce. Having additional certifications can help you get ahead of the game. Plus, many states require specific teacher certifications, so including it on your resume shows you’re ready to get started.
What this means for you:
Highlight your positive impact
Employers care about results. You can have all the experience and education in the world, but none of it matters if it doesn’t make a positive difference to the students and school.
What this means for you:
- Get specific with your achievements, like improved student test scores or successfully led programs. Back yourself up with concrete numbers and outcomes to show your positive influence.
- Narrate your success stories by outlining a challenge, how you addressed it, and the results. For example, mention how you helped students build confidence and participate more with interactive lesson planning.
Give evidence of soft skills
Many teacher resumes will have keywords like “excellent communicator” and “good listener”. Employers have heard it all before. Back up your soft skills to make your claims more credible and impactful.
What this means for you:
- Instead of adding a long list that looks AI-generated, pair your soft skills with concrete examples. For example, describe how your behavior management strategies reduced classroom disruptions by 15%.
- Teachers go beyond simply improving grades. Explain how your empathy and understanding increased student confidence and established a trusting environment within your classroom.
Outline your teaching philosophy
Summarizing your personal philosophy provides a framework for your teaching approach, showcasing your goals, values, and methods to potential employers.
What this means for you:
- Briefly mention your teaching philosophy in your resume summary. Convey your passion for teaching, what environment you aim to create, and how you want to impact your students.
- Highlight how your philosophy translates into practice and ensure it aligns with your skills. You could describe how you used your creative approach to drive project-based learning to enhance student engagement and critical thinking skills.
Bonus Resources for Teachers
Landing your dream teaching job isn’t easy when fifty other candidates have similar degrees, experience, and all those shiny skills. Adding courses and certifications to your resume can give you that extra edge.
If you’ve made it this far, you’re likely polishing the final details of your resume — but hear me out: many courses take just a weekend to complete, some even just a few hours. If it gives you that crucial advantage, it’s worth the time.
And even if you don’t have the time to complete a course before the submission deadline for this resume, feel free to bookmark this tab and save those for later. You’ll thank me in a few years when you’re in the front row for that promotion.

Summary
Here are the most important steps for creating a resume for a teacher:
- Choose the right resume format: reverse-chronological for steady careers, or combination (hybrid) to highlight specific skills and experience, especially if you’ve worked 10+ years as a teacher. Functional resume format is very risky, I don’t recommend it.
- Craft a clear header with your full name, contact information, and professional profile links, like LinkedIn, to make it easy for recruiters to reach you.
- Write a strong summary that concisely introduces your teaching philosophy, career goals, and key strengths to grab attention.
- Detail your work history while highlighting responsibilities, achievements, and impact using clear bullet points for easy reading.
- Highlight your education by including degrees, institutions, graduation dates, and any relevant certifications to showcase your educational background. If you have numerous relevant certifications, put them in a separate “Certifications” section.
- Showcase key skills relevant to teaching, such as classroom management, curriculum development, technology integration, and effective communication abilities.
- Include certifications and licenses, listing any state teaching licenses and additional certifications like special education or subject-specific credentials.
- Add professional development experiences like workshops, courses, or training sessions that have enhanced your teaching skills and demonstrate your commitment to growth.
- Incorporate keywords from the job posting to ensure your resume passes through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and catches the recruiter's eye.
- Proofread and edit your resume to ensure it’s free of errors, clear, concise, and tailored to the specific teaching job you're applying for.
FAQ
How do you describe a substitute teacher role on a resume?
As a substitute teacher, highlight your ability to manage diverse classrooms. Emphasize your flexibility in stepping into various teaching environments and subjects, showcasing your capacity to maintain continuity in educational goals.
Mention the range of grades and subjects you’ve covered, underscoring your readiness to handle different instructional needs. Detail any positive feedback received from teachers and students alike, illustrating your effectiveness in maintaining a conducive learning atmosphere even in short-term roles.
What is a good objective for a teacher’s resume?
A strong objective for a teacher’s resume should convey your passion for education and commitment to fostering student learning and development. It should state the specific grade levels or subjects you aim to teach, aligning with the job you’re applying for.
For instance, “Dedicated elementary school teacher passionate about creating engaging learning experiences that promote academic and social growth.” Ensure your objective is tailored to the specific school or educational institution, reflecting your enthusiasm to contribute positively to the learning environment.
How to write a teacher’s resume with no experience?
Begin with a strong objective, highlighting your eagerness for teaching and willingness to learn. Focus on relevant skills gained through coursework, internships, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities. Emphasize any teaching-related certifications, workshops attended, or specialized training.
If you're making a career change into a teacher role and have a wealth of experience (even in another field) go for a combination resume format. Opt for a “modified” reverse-chronological resume if you're a new grad with limited work experience. Add your education above the work experience section and highlight any relevant coursework, extracurricular activities, academic achievements, and club memberships.
What is the best resume layout for teachers?
For teachers, a reverse-chronological resume layout works best. Start with your contact information and a strong professional summary. Follow with sections on work experience, education, certifications, and additional skills or qualifications.
Use bullet points to list responsibilities and achievements in each role, emphasizing measurable outcomes where possible. Ensure your resume is well-organized, visually appealing, and easy to navigate, using clear headings and concise language to showcase your experience effectively.
How long should a resume be for a teacher?
A teacher’s resume should typically be 1–2 pages in length. Aim to include relevant information highlighting your qualifications, skills, and experiences related to the teaching position you are applying for. Keep it concise and focused on key achievements and responsibilities, using bullet points for clarity.
