How to List Publications on Your Resume
The Publications section highlights professional or academic work you’ve written or contributed to. This section is most useful for research, academic, writing, or expert-level roles.

What Counts as a Publication
Include:
- Academic journal articles
- Research papers
- Books or book chapters
- Conference papers or presentations
- Peer-reviewed articles
- Industry reports or white papers
Avoid:
- Personal blogs
- Casual or hobby writing
- Non-professional articles not relevant to the role
When to Include Publications
Add a Publications section if:
- You’re applying for academic, research, or teaching roles
- The role involves writing, analysis, or subject-matter expertise
- You’re a student or recent graduate with limited work experience
- Publications strengthen your credibility for the job
If publications are not relevant to the role, leave them out.
How to Add Publications to Your Resume
If you have 3 or more publications
- Create a separate “Publications” section
- Place it after Education or Experience
- List entries in reverse chronological order
If you have 1–2 publications
- Include them under your Education section
What to Include for Each Publication
- Title of the work
- Journal, book, or conference name
- Year of publication
- DOI or link (if available)
Example:
Smith, J. (2024). Data-Driven Hiring Models. Journal of Workforce Analytics.
Formatting Guidelines
- Use one citation style consistently (APA, MLA, or simplified format)
- Choose the style commonly used in your field
- Keep formatting clean and readable
- Label unpublished work clearly as “in press” or “submitted”
Best Practices
- Prioritize relevance over quantity
- Focus on recent or high-impact work
- Do not exaggerate or list unverified publications
- Group similar publications if space is limited
Resume vs CV
- Resume: Include only the most relevant publications
- CV: A full publications list is expected and encouraged
