Tailor your resume for each job application by using keywords from the job description, and keep it concise — ideally one page, especially if you’re early in your career.

Choose a readable format 

The tech industry isn’t known for its frills and aesthetics (though Apple may beg to differ). You can apply that same no-nonsense approach to the formatting of your resume. Recruiters want to see your experiences and skills at a glance — without sifting through flashy graphics or pie charts.

Your goal is to make your tech resume readable and ATS-friendly, so recruiters can easily skim through. The reverse chronological order is your safest bet — this tried-and-tested structure places your latest roles and achievements at the top, giving recruiters a quick view of your career growth without much effort.

Here’s a general guideline of how to order each resume section:

  • Summary or objective

You should aim to fit everything onto one page, or no more than 2 pages. And if you have a lot to say? Skip elaborate styling, fonts, or colors — it’ll make you stand out for all the wrong reasons. Many resumes are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), so creative fonts and design elements can confuse the systems. Stick with professional resume fonts, like Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica (between 10 and 12 points) which are more familiar and easy to read.

Bullet points are another handy way to boost readability and break up your text. Use them to describe your work experiences — 3 to 6 points per role is enough to get your message across. And avoid big chunks of white space; aim for consistent alignment and indentation, so your resume looks professional and polished. 

Add your contact details and portfolio link

This part is simple, just don’t mess it up — one typo in your email could end your chances of getting an interview. Place your contact details at the top of your resume, with your full name, followed by your phone number and professional email. Make sure your email is current and professional (if it still has that childhood nickname, it’s time to upgrade). 

You can also add a link to your LinkedIn profile, so recruiters can verify your work history and see any recommendations. If you have a current GitHub profile or personal website, include those too. It’s a great way to show off your projects and coding skills — but only if they’re ready for professional eyes.

But if you’re fresh out of college or making a career transition, you can afford to bulk up this section and place it above your work experience — just make sure everything is relevant to the job.
